Writing is like being able to put life into a snow globe. It takes the things that are too big and scary and reduces them into a form that I can put away when I want and look at from a distance. It also takes all that’s good in life and captures it into something I can take out when I want and look at close up and keep forever. It makes the bad things into something I can hold…and the good things into something I can hold onto. Both help so much that I need that little souvenir of life.

Improper Poll: Secretly Watching

My daughter’s high school graduation was this weekend. And what do graduations remind me of, you ask? Or, more probably, you don’t…but I’m going to tell you anyway, although can you tell I am putting this off? Okay. Here goes. I used to be addicted to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

It’s true. This was the TV show version, which I discovered—as I’ve discovered most of my great TV loves—in syndication. It used to be aired late at night in my area on Saturday nights. My children were younger then, so I was overwhelmingly busy most days and evenings, yet had nothing to do on weekend nights.

For one thing, the casting director for that show must’ve had the most wonderful taste in men. Even the supposed nerds were hot. And how can you not love a little high school girl who calmly kicks vampire butt like that? Buffy was the ultimate liberated woman. She was feminine, smart, calm and powerful. She loved and respected men—just not the ones who attacked her, from whom she took not an ounce of grief. In retrospect, Buffy helped inspire me to do a little real-life-vampire ass-kicking (or out-kicking)…and for that, I will be eternally grateful. Even the name is wonderful: “Buffy!”…snort…. If by chance you’ve never seen the Buffy/Twilight Remix, it’s worth a look (and I am not a Twilight-hater, either). Go Buffy.

Do you have a show you’ve secretly loved but are a bit embarrassed to claim?

  1. Probably more than a few. But my pride does not allow me to divulge their titles...(ha)

  2. Okay, I will admit to ONE of my guilty pleasures...Years ago, Magnum P.I. was televised on Friday nights. After teaching all week, and getting by on little sleep all week, by Friday I was wiped out. Magnum was there--easy on the brain, and really easy on the eye--when I needed something mindless.

Sadly, there were weeks when I fell asleep on the couch in the middle of the episode; I could not even manage to stay up til 8 or 9 or whenever it ended...

  3. My husband is such a snob when it comes to t.v. watching, so there are plenty of shows I watch in secret! One is "America's Got Talent." I also watch all the old episodes of Law and Order, and Bones.

  4. In the early 1970s I watched "General Hospital" for a week when I was too sick to go to work.
Let me see, what else? I really love the new Hawaii Five-O, but I hear it's going to be discontinued.
I ought to be watching re-runs of "The Dog Whisperer" because our dog only obeys when she wants to, but I'm too lazy to learn anything new, including dog-training, and what channel it can be found on.

  5. I watched Buffy in re-runs and was taken with her attitude. As to my embarrassing habits I'd have to say "F-Troop." Old show but I loved it, kids don't play cowboys and Indians anymore do they? :)

  6. My weakness is reality television. Sometimes I think I am single-handedly keeping MTV and CBS in business. I don't watch anything secretly, but the show I'm least likely to bring up in conversation is Big Brother.

I don't just watch the packaged TV broadcast three times a week. I watch Big Brother After Dark on Showtime, and seek out spoilers on the internet. I have not yet stooped to the 24/7 live feeds. But that's only because my internet connection is too slow. Many, many mom-hours are wasted by me on this addiction. Thank goodness it's on in the summer.

  7. Murder She Wrote, The Wild, Wild West, and Hogan's Heroes.

  8. Buffy. Angel. Loved them both, even though I was way passed being a teenager when they aired.

The show I secretly admired (but wouldn't normally admit to) was Saved By The Bell.

  9. Since I CANNOT email you I'm leaving another comment. Just wanted to make sure the ground beneath your feet is still there? Heard about the 4.2 and thought of you, let me know. :)
