Writing is like being able to put life into a snow globe. It takes the things that are too big and scary and reduces them into a form that I can put away when I want and look at from a distance. It also takes all that’s good in life and captures it into something I can take out when I want and look at close up and keep forever. It makes the bad things into something I can hold…and the good things into something I can hold onto. Both help so much that I need that little souvenir of life.

Improper Poll: The Shirt of Worms

While moving my daughter into college, the subject of theft came up. And this reminded me of my all-time favorite article of clothing, ever, which was unfortunately stolen at college along with some others. My Favorite Article of Clothing of All Time was a souvenir tee shirt from Worms, Nebraska.

Yes, there is such a place, though I’m sorry to say I have never actually had the pleasure of visiting there. I admired a friend’s shirt so much that she gave me one as a gift. Her father was a farmer who used to drive to Worms for some reason. At the time, I believe she told me that the population of Worms was somewhere around 25 people. There was a church and a bar. The bar was appropriately called “Night Crawlers.”

What is your All-Time Favorite Article of Clothing?

  1. MY favorite article of clothing was a smiley-face T-shirt. It wasn't stolen, but I was in a head-on collision when I still had my permit (it was completely NOT my fault---a kid came into my lane and hit the gas instead of the brakes and I had nowhere to go)and although I was wearing a seatbelt, I broke my nose. It bled all over the shirt and--alas, ruined it.

How's it going with your daughter around?

  2. My favorite piece of clothing: suck me in panties which are failing miserably after this summer's binge.

  3. What an interesting question. I'd have to say either my hat with pinwheels or my coat with the hidden flask pocket. Which while wearing the coat explains the hat. :)

  4. Ooops! I meant, "How is it with your daughter NOT around?"

  5. My favorite article of clothing was an Alaska Yukon Brew t-shirt that I got in Alaska (duh) the summer before my senior year of high school. It was a heather-hued pink number with red trim around the neck and sleeves. Across the front was emblazoned the immortal poem:

I've drunk hooch from round the world,
    The wine from gay Paree,
Goat's milk brew and Mountain Dew,
    And the beer of Germany.

I've had it taste like everything
    From milk to Chinese glue.
But nothing gets your courage up
    Like Alaska Yukon Brew.

I wore that shirt under my volleyball uniform for every game. We placed 3rd in the state tournament that year. My shirt was second in popularity among the team members, being outshone only by our setter's Panama Red t-shirt.

Ah..times were so much different then. Neither shirt would be allowed on school property these days.

  6. Your "worms" shirt certainly beats one from Chicken, Alaska, a stop along the old Alaska Highway. The restroom for the general store was an outhouse! My favorite shirt wore out to the point where there was nothing left but the wording on the front which said, "time is meaningless in the face of creativity." I cut that part out and stitched it to the front of one of my teaching aprons.

  7. Now those are some clothing stories! Sounds like Alaska is #1 in interesting tee-shirt production. And yes, Val, the other tees that were stolen along with the Worms one would no longer be allowed in schools, either. Jules and Linda, I laughed out loud. Linda, your comment reminded me of a TV character I recently saw who kept talking about how she had on her "date Spanks." Speaking of dates, Sioux--I heard from an old flame whom I've known since I was a kid and have been dating again. Also it's been easier than I'd feared because my young 'un was gone so much her senior year, it's not much different. But that's easy to say now since we just had a busy holiday weekend! Hope you all had a great one, too!

  8. I still miss my favorite madras skirt I loaned to a friend and never got back. Of course it would never fit me now.

  9. My favourite piece of clothing was a Twist dress that I used to wear every Saturday night when I went dancing. It was light brown and swung pleasingly as I twisted the night away. It washed and dried like a dream and I loved it.

  10. My favorite is a knit sweater I bought from the sale rack (I think I paid all of $10.00 for it) from Paul Harris, a store that went out of business many years ago. I've had that sweater since about 1993 and it is still as good as new. I'll never get rid of it. Ever. I adore that sweater, so as long as it still fits me, I'll keep wearing it because, clearly, it will never die.

  11. I am fickle, fickle, fickle about clothes. Past beloved items get the axe as current ones replace them. In keeping with the T-shirt theme, I'll describe one of my current favorites. It's a pleasing shade of green and carries this message:

    50,000 words
One of them is bound to be good.

Can you tell I'm already thinking about November?

  12. My favorite article of clothing (ah, but I can't stop laughing at some of these comments. Damn, Linda, you funny, girl!) changes with the decades. In the 70s it was my plaid pinafore. Wore it to see Donny Osmond and family in concert. In the 80s it was my boyfriend's jean jacket covered in buttons (i.e. "Too Hot Too Handle, ACDC Rocks, etc. etc.), in the early 90s it was a pair of black pants, the things and ass of which were covered in suede, like dress pants for riding bare-back (Christ, what must my mother have thought!?), and now...hmmmm...it'd have to be my cozy, worn in Lucky brand jeans. ; )

  13. Things? No, I'm certain I meant to say "Thighs" Oh Good Lord, that did not sound good - ha!

  14. What wonderful memories! I meant "Spanx," by the way. How ironic that the more I need a support garment, the less willing I am to wear one....

Donna and Jabblog, those comfy, swingy skirts are wonderful, aren't they?

Lisa, I love the idea of the undying sweater. And Pat, what a wonderful NANOWRIMO t-shirt!

Beth, I am laughing so hard! So glad to hear you aren't stashing mysterious "things" in your suede ass-pants!!
