Writing is like being able to put life into a snow globe. It takes the things that are too big and scary and reduces them into a form that I can put away when I want and look at from a distance. It also takes all that’s good in life and captures it into something I can take out when I want and look at close up and keep forever. It makes the bad things into something I can hold…and the good things into something I can hold onto. Both help so much that I need that little souvenir of life.

Improper Poll: Meanderings of a Muddled Mind

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and prayers for our beloved dog! They really mean so much. He ate a tiny bit yesterday, which we’re taking to be a very good sign.

This week’s medical crisis reminded me that I just don’t handle exhaustion well. Not only do I get clumsy when I’m sleep-deprived, I make mistakes. Weird mistakes. Once after way too little sleep, I sprayed Bactine in my hair only because it had a green top like my hairspray bottle. And I’m sorry to say that’s not the only weird thing I’ve sprayed in my hair by mistake. Let’s just say roll-on deodorant can be a good thing. And if my coffee pot didn’t have a timer, I hate to think how often I would make either waterless coffee or a pot of hot water in the morning.

Now that I often use eye drops when I wake up, I find that I must hold up a mental sign that says, “Check the label, Forrest!” Needless to say, I could never be a medical resident. Am I the only one, or have you ever done anything goofy when you’re half asleep?

  1. I (too often) am half-asleep at my computer. When that happens, the things that appear on the screen are sometimes nonsensical (they are merely letters next to each other, but not words) and other times, they ARE words, but have nothing to do with what I am supposed to be writing about.

  2. Also, I'm so glad that things might be looking up for Buddy. When the "old guys" start to falter a bit, it worries us so much. Any little step that looks like it's toward the end darkens our world. (Annie is going on 15, and one day not long ago, she didn't eat dinner or breakfast. I thought sure it was the end, but no, she gobbled up the next meal. Perhaps she was just feeling a bit bloated and wanted to slim down for a outing she was having in the yard that day?)

I will keep Buddy in my thoughts...

  4. I have sprayed deodorant in my hair on too many occasions. And of course I have put ointment on my toothbrush. Now let's move to the kitchen: I have tried to put the ice cream in the pantry which is right next to the freezer. I have accidentally frozen a bag of lettuce. And when I put a bottle of wine in the freezer to chill it, I always have to carry a timer around with me so I won't forget to take it out before it explodes!

  5. My kids always said they could get away with murder when I was napping and half asleep because I responded to their requests affirmatively. Hubby says I interact with the TV and talk in my sleep. I think they are all crazy.

  6. I took a shower with my socks on. That was when I was sleep-deprived from taking care of my first-born, who never slept.

I cooked a pizza with the cardboard thingy still under it. That was just stupidity. Do they put that on the directions? "Remove pizza from cardboard and place on center rack of oven for 21-24 minutes?" Because if they don't, maybe they should.

  7. Once, I accidentally used nail polish remover on my eyelids, thinking it was makeup remover! They both were in bottles of pinkish looking liquid, and next to each other. I realized it when the smell hit me. Fortunately I didn't get any in my eyes, and my polish remover didn't contain toluene.
I don't keep them in the same drawer any more!

  8. All the time. Once I woke up around 8:PM and started to get dressed for work. Got completely ready when my wife to be called me and asked me if I wanted to do something. I told her I needed to go to work. She just laughed.

  9. Hey Tam, glad to hear Buddy is doing better! And as far as doing dumb things....I don't even have to be sleep-deprived....I'm just being ME! Remember when I referred to Donna's "bong" at Barnes & Noble that time?? (I meant the gong she was going to use as a timer!) I once poured astringent in my mouth, thinking it was mouthwash. The minute I tasted it, I spit it out! Good thing it wasn't meant to be swallowed!

  10. Hi Tammy,
Glad to hear Buddy is on the mend.
Let's see. It's hard to top yours and the other posts.
Once I went to early Mass with my dress inside out. On two occasions I wore two different shoes to work because I dressed in the dark. Once I arrived 6 hours early for carpool. That night I fell asleep exhausted, after about two hour's sleep, I thought I had overslept, looked at the last two digits ont he clock, woke up, got dressed and drove to my carpooler's house. She came to the door and I tried to convince her it was 5:30 a.m., when actually it was 11:30 p.m. So, I got to go home and do it all over again several hours later. Kind of like Ground Hog Day.
