Writing is like being able to put life into a snow globe. It takes the things that are too big and scary and reduces them into a form that I can put away when I want and look at from a distance. It also takes all that’s good in life and captures it into something I can take out when I want and look at close up and keep forever. It makes the bad things into something I can hold…and the good things into something I can hold onto. Both help so much that I need that little souvenir of life.

Stuff Around My Desk

A friend of mine who is writing a book mentioned a while back that she was going to have her picture taken at her desk. I think that is so cool. To be photographed, smiling, clutching a cup of coffee over a spotless desk…! This would be completely staged b.s. in my case.

One of the reasons I refuse to get Scype is because I don’t want anyone to know what I look like when I sit at my desk. Or what my desk looks like whether I am there or not. I was going to take a picture to show you what I mean, but it's too awful, even for me.  So here is one of the various things I have taped up around me besides about two dozen post-its.  I've always loved how Dave Barry made fun of "English Major's Brain,"  which I have, big time.
And welcome to my newest follower, Kim Sloggett! Kim, thank you so much for becoming a follower. If you have a blog, please let me know!

Don't you wish you had a job like mine? All you have to do is think up a certain number of words! Plus, you can repeat words! And they don't even have to be true! ~Dave Barry

  1. Ah, come on show us your clutter! I bet I can beat you, my desk has gotten so bad I'm boxing up things just to make room for more clutter :)

  2. A cluttered desk is the sign of a creative mind. (At least that's what I tell myself.)

I am the process of de-cluttering up our spare bedroom so it can be a work space for me. If we have any snow days this week, perhaps I can finish?

  3. Tammy, you've seen how bad my office looks....at least I sent you photos once, didn't I?? I keep putting stuff on the floor and pushing it aside so I can at least walk from my desk to the copy machine! Now where are those bills I'm suppose to pay?!... Gotta love Dave Barry!

  4. Love Dave Barry...he's a riot. I'm with you. No one needs to see me doing what I do. Which, okay, sounds slightly creepy. I just mean that sometimes I write in my jammies, sometimes in my sweats. Sometimes I'm more like Roseanne than Donna Reed, ya know? Some things are just better left to the imagination. LOL

  5. I firmly believe any photo that shows a writer behind a spotless desk is absolutely staged b.s. No way, no how can any writer function without being surrounded by the helpful clutter of books, paper, pens, markers, paper clips, stapler, password list, CD's, note cards, cup of something hot and caffeine-filled, notes to self, file folder, envelopes, and on and on it goes!

  7. Hi Tammy,
My desk is messy, but I pretty much know where to find everything.
    Love the Dave Barry quote.
